I don't think luck comes in to the equation but strategy does. A random word with no strategy is luck. A first word chosen for what it's letters can reveal is a strategy rather than skill. If needed I have a second strategic word for line two.

This does mean my chances of getting a hole in one are close to zero!

I struggled aswell! My first failure. Got to line 4 and five possibles with only two lines left, so tried a word to eliminate as many as I could, leaving two possibles with one line and chose the wrong one.

Depends what you mean by "close to zero". It doesn't seem to use particularly obscure words (leaving aside the US spelling debacle) so the available list is going to be in the high hundreds or low thousands. Is 1/1000-ish close to zero? Maybe.

Still, given the number of people playing it, the chance of someone getting a hole in one each day must be pretty good. I think I've seen two already on this thread and I don't read every page.

I think the significant role played of luck is what makes it so popular. There's a comfortably high luck/skill balance.

I got one. Absolute luck.

It works the other way too, where you can be one letter short, and there can be several options. No amount of skill can help there, unless you interrogate the algorithm.

There are apparently 2,315 words in the Wordle lexicon.

So, provided you manage to avoid the other 10,000 or so 5-letter words in the English language which will never come up, the odds on your first guess being correct on any given day are roughly 0.04%.
