It's also interesting how differently people consider success in the game. Personally I don't aim for a minimum number of guesses, if I get it in the allotted six then I've completed it and that's that. I also barely think about my opening word, I just use either the first or the sweariest (because I'm a forty-four year old child) five letter word that pops into my head. Thinking too hard about strategy would take away the fun for me, I like the simplicity.
That's pretty much how I see it. Like a crossword the aim is to get to the end.

My one "fail" was when I tried to do it in record time, simply blasting it with guesses. It didn't help was also only the second or third time I'd tried, and I didn't realise you were limited to 6 goes.

Top tip: Don't start with "QAJAQ"

I knew I'd been going wrong somewhere!

Only one of my handful of starter words is in the top 100 (position 25) while others are close but differ by a single letter.
I think I'll keep to my own method of guessing, rather than the mathematical approach. It's more fun.

Quite tricky. Not many words sprang to mind with possible vowel combinations.

What interests me is other people's techniques and starter words. I'm always interested when people refer to guesses as I think the number of guesses is limited. Obviously the first line is a guess but once a green or yellow is established it becomes a thought through process of combining letter elimination and word building. It can though reach a stage where it does become a straight guess and that's when I feel my guess is based on trying to decide how difficult Wordle is trying to make the game.

Some games one reaches a point when only two or three answers are possible and that is a straight guess.
There is a whole science of letter frequencies in English and other languages — a beloved sub-genre for cryptographers and orthographers. Depending on the register and kind of text being investigated most studies come up with a top-10 frequency list such as this, ordered from more to less frequent:
E-T-A-O-I-N-S-H-R-D
This would make a word such as STAIN an excellent start word. However, virtually all 5-letter words contain a vowel or the letter Y, so to cover the maximum number of vowels a word such as ADIEU would be a good choice. To get all the vowels in the first two words, one could try ADIEU followed by THORN, this then leaves S as the only uncited top-10 letter in the first two words.
In practice, the results of the first guess normally make the second word something other than a composite of the unused top 10. However, the principle seems to hold good and I normally get the answer in three or four tries.

I think it's harder on the occasions when they use multiples of the same letter, as there's no indication of this. I'll be ready when they do TEEPE though :okay:

How about going for THORN first. If ADIEU gives you the correct number of vowels, you are still pretty clueless as to what the word might be. However if you hit 3 consonants with THORN, then your option of possible words is drastically reduced and you can formulate another strategy for your second word.

The letter frequency for 5-letter words differs slightly from the whole-language list above. In turn, the letter frequency of the 2,500-word Wordle answer list differs from that of the list of 8,500-ish words allowed as guesses in Wordle. I'm still convinced it has a slightly nerdy bias and doesn't have any obscure Scrabble-only sorts of words, as the game's author's GF was meant to stand a chance of solving daily!
