Wild around here today. Strong gusty wind with hail & rain.
And tragedy of tragedies......we are about to lose a fence panel:eek:.
My sister in Towcester has lost fence panels on one side of her back garden, and a fence panel on the other side was mounted on top of a low wall and the flapping of the panel was enough to break the wall!

I found a roll of draught excluder that I had forgotten buying. I have put strips of that round the door to my attic stairs and have reduced the draught by about 80%.

I have just seen the forecast for the weekend - 'Storm Dennis' is coming next!

My phone BBC forecast show the winds as being light through next week.

The Met Office is suggesting winds of 15-20+ mph here with gusts of 30-45+ mph!

I just went to put some rubbish out and saw a dustbin lid on the far side of my backyard. "So, the lid has blown off your dustbin - big deal!" you might suggest... Er, I have a 2 metre high fence and I don't have a dustbin - I have a wheelie bin - that lid has blown in over the fence from somewhere else! I'll have to see if I can spot a neighbour's lidless bin.

There's reports that another storm is coming next weekend. Storm Dennis here we come!! 💨💨
Er, *cough*...

:okay:

Bin lid repatriation, attempt #1 - I went out and wandered up and down the back alley looking for a lidless bin to mate with my binless lid. I was beaten back by a sudden hail attack!

Some time later, bin lid repatriation, attempt #2 - I was only out for a few seconds when I started being deluged by freezing sleet. I gave up, dumped the lid in an obvious place in the alley, weighed it down with a chunk of broken paving slab to stop it getting blown away again, ran back indoors into the warm***.

If I unexpectedly get a life (or lose the quiet one that I have!), my fascinating weather reports from Todmorden will abruptly cease. Otherwise, stay battened down, and await the next exciting instalment.

*** I say 'warm'... so far my heating has only managed to get this room up to 16.6 degrees, but I have got it on its lowest setting so I can't complain.

Resorted to a rarely used gas fire as it was 14.5 when I got in, now switched off with the thermometer on 17.5 before E-on rub their hands too much. Put wheelie bin out for collection tomorrow, big thud, wheelie bin on side, sliding noise and the lid popped open, wheelie bin stood up and repositioned on the other side of a short hedge, curtains drawn. Assuming it will still be their in the morning.

While I was looking for lidless bins I spotted quite a lot of wheelie bins strewn about on their sides in the back alley. Mine is safely tucked away in the corner of my enclosed yard but it did appear to have blown about a metre or so from where I'd left it on Friday.

A pal of mine has a small 12v wind turbine at his cottage on the cliffs in Pembrokeshire. One very windy day it was spinning like mad and he noticed strands of brown stuff streaming out of the back of the alternator, which he realised was the resin insulation from the windings. Deciding he had better stay away he watched through the bathroom window as the alternator overheated and seized and the blades flew off, one slicing through one of the steel guys allowing the mast to break and the turbine to topple slowly over, the boss punching a neat hole in the roof of his new Passat estate. Oops.

A full size wind turbine at Washington, Tyne and Wear, caught fire a few years ago.

It was a windy day so the fire may have been caused the same way.

Walking weekend for 'beginners' coming up - organised thingy with Mrs F - in storm Dennis, in Snowdonia.

Don't do walking, it's too slow, and the wheel and knobbly tyre has replaced walking boots. MTB'ing in the mud, rain and slop - great fun, walking in it ?

At least I have loads of suitable base layers, gloves etc. Had to buy walking pants and boots though. Mrs F has just spent an arm and a leg on a decent jacket (she's doing this 'weekend' as training for walking Snowdon for 'sunrise' in April - I'm not bothering, she's going with a mate - I'd rather bike it).

its quite a common occurrence.
they should have an over ride clutch system that basically puts it into neutral in very high wind conditions and the blades turn flat so they don’t catch the wind. So wind turbines don’t actually generate in strong gales.
The problem comes when people forget to maintain their turbines and the generator gets over stressed.
