Have 'V' brakes had their day?

With the ever falling price and availability of disc brakes on most bikes has the ever faithful V brake / rim brake had it's day?
Is it now prudent to look at the disc equipped model of any range of bikes when buying a new one or is it where the clever people save money buy buying the V braked model knowing full well that good old rim brakes have served use well for years?

Or is this the end of road for rim brakes, will discs become the norm?

I still have rim brakes, and not even the V variety.... hopefully it'll make my bike far less attractive to thieves as it's far too outdated to flog.

Disc brakes sound a bit hi-tech for my liking.

I think rim brakes will be around for a good few years, but I'd be reluctant to buy a new frame without disc mounts, especially now Shimano are about to release a hydraulic lever with mechanical gear shifting - http://road.cc/content/news/115210-shimano-introduces-road-hydro-disc-brakes-mechanical-shifting
