I think there might be some better stats out there yes. Lets assume there was not though. Are you telling me you don't see something gaping holes in that method?

Let's have them, then.

Was actually hoping for an honest answer from you.............

Ha! You don't trust Dan's stats for some reason, and you think there might be "better" ones, but you can't say where they might be! How terribly convenient. Someone can wake me up when you've found them.

In fact this is a very good point.

There is inconclusive evidence either way, which is the most foolish?

Making a decision to wear a helmet based on own belief? or
Making a decision not to wear a helmet based on inconclusive evidence?

What I would like from you is for you actually to think about the decision you make and the reasons behind it rather than hiding behind phrases like "I feel" and "I believe".

I have made it quite clear in this thread and others that I do sometimes wear a helmet and sometimes don't and no those decisions are not logical at all.

Not sure I can think about why Ive made the decision, I may base my decisions on the most foolish reasons, but they are my reasons and make sense to me, maybe there will come a time when I see it differently like oldmanroad, but for now im happy with my decision

I also dont see why my own beliefs and decision, however wrong you feel it is, could in any way contribute to compulsion, thats why I say there are posters who are paranoid about this.
I have no problem with you choosing to wear or not wear a helmet - or lycra! Both feel good to a good many cyclists. But there is a general feeling - which you appeared to share - that there was a strong safety issue with helmets. This logically leads to a community seeing the non-wearing as deliberately endangering and for the more authoritarian a target to stop.

I apologise if you see it, like lycra, as a pure lifestyle choice.

But there is no hint of compulsion felt (outside clubland) for wearing lycra. I don't wear a helmet. That precludes me from various rides which have no added injury risk. Not wearing a helmet gets me a lot of tut tutting and misrepresentation on my commitment to safety. I shall be taking my grandson out on a tag-along next year. He will have a helmet. Its not to protect his head, its to protect me from being regarded me as an unfit grandparent.

Sadly I really wish that sentence was over the top. But paranoia is OK when they are really out to get you ...

Fine. I'm happy with it too, but seeing as it isn't based on anything, why not invent a more interesting reason? An angel told you to wear it, perhaps, or you have a Chicken Licken complex?

I respect your decision Stuart, youve based it on what you believe built up over time, ive used the same but come up with a different decision, Im happy that there are people who dont wear a helmet and have based this on their own logic as opposed to only making the decision after reading lots of evidence and stats

mayb the word i used 'paranoia' is extreme, i couldnt think of an alternative that described what i meant

I need to work on my vocabulary, too many bangs to the head I think ^_^
