Whilst I hate to be a miseryguts, I doubt that 30 miles burned that many calories...
While I love to be up to my nuts in them, surely that much riding will easily burn 1400 calories? Unless its on a motorbike. With that being said, how much effort is one calorie? How high can you lift a 20kg object with 1 calorie.

Errrm, based on a previous post, I can find the OP's garmin connect data for the ride which will give me elevation profile, speed and route, amongst other things. This post here means I can make an estimate on height/weight.

As a result, I stand by my original statement, thanks.

i'm no expert in any way but are we not led to believe that you burn 100 calories every 10 mins of exercise . It takes me 120 odd minutes to do 30 mile which is 1200 calories so close enough

I find these energy consumption data really bewildering...if I eat loads and loads of cake and cycle slower then I'll use more energy cycling therefore get fitter...Right? Where's the cake tin...:hungry:
PS If you put a tailwind into kreuzotter that is just less than your speed it calculates that you use almost zero energy...no cake at all!

all these are assumptions, so many factors vary the amount of calories burned so surely all we can do is try to have a most accurate guess possible. Endo works out around 80 cals a mile for me at an average of 16mph which at 15 1/2 stone i think sounds around right. i normally cycle slower and a guess of 50 cals a mile may be right for that. after all we only need a guide

Every person and every ride is different. Waste of time trying to guesstimate other people's calorie burn, IMHO. That being said, I guess at the the OP having burned 967 on his ride :P

Jeez, so when eating a meal for 4 to ourselves you're saying we have to go on big rides now?? :mrpig:
its my fast metabolism ! ,thats my excuse ... maybe this is why i cant get up hills as fast as the chain gang

A scientist wannabe talks about power in relation to speed. Swap his Buggatti Veyron for your bicycle or any moving object within the realms of a planets atmosphere and the same principles apply. James was stating that the veyron uses about 270 hp to achieve 150mph. The faster you go the more the bitch mother nature pushes back and that is why to reach 253 mph requires another 730 horse power!. The same principles apply to cycling. If your already doing 16 mph, its gonna take another 300% (anyone care to do the actual maths? just a shot in the dark guess lol) just to get 25 mph in the same riding conditions. So basically this means to cover the same distance at a faster speed requires substantially more energy. If you were given a certain amount of energy, you would get further by cycling slower rather than faster when given specific riding conditions. Now shut up!

As for cake and its effects on human anatomy? Well james was more of a physicist than a human biologist.
