went out for a ride on the bike, set off from home (siddal) through sowerby Bridge to Ripponden then decided in my infinite wisdom to take on Ripponden Bank 3.3 miles of extremely steep hill. I did it.....................but I walked two and a half miles of it, it was a nice evening for a steady walk ^_^^_^

Edit ; the distance quoted is way wrong, the hill is only three quarters of a mile but it is still bloody steep.

Very strange, since the hill is only 3/4 mile long! (See the post by Ajax Bay above.)

It is quite steep but it isn't terribly long. It featured on the local Tour de France stage in 2014.

i've obviously been looking at the wrong road on google maps then , it's the road that turns sharp left at ripponden traffic lights, goes down by the bridge inn then climbs steeply uphill to Greetland rd
Edit: 'scuse my cock up in the first post, it was the directions I typed into google maps that resulted in that mileage quote, and yes it is very steep , especially for an old fart like me. A young man , I would estimate to be in his early twenties sailed past me on his bike as i was walking up the hill, he shouted a friendly greeting as he went past.

I dropped the missus car of at the local car garage yesterday. Only because I'd been researching riding on the canal, did I know there is a way off the canal ner home. It's a much nicer 1 mile walk home I did on Tuesday. Walking up the bloody steps to the road did I think this wasn't my back making things difficult when I did it with the MTB on my back a couple of weeks ago, it's the ruddy 1 in 2 stone steps. I had the same issues getting up, without bike.

The road that goes left at the lights is Elland Road which becomes Ripponden New Bank higher up. That doesn't go past the Bridge Inn.

The road that goes past the pub is a cobbled beast and is signed 'For access only' and becomes Ripponden Old Bank higher up. I have ridden New Bank and that is quite tough. Old Bank does look a right pig but I have not yet tried riding up it.

The thing is - neither of the climbs is anywhere near a mile long so I can't see where you are getting that figure of 3.3 miles from.

i did a directions search on google maps from Ripponden to Greetland and quoted what it came up with, my fault for not realising.

It is steep. My dad used to take me to practice hill starts on it when he taught me to drive.

Long time ago, been darn sarf now for yonks.

Ah, that explains it!

I think I had to walk that climb myself the first few times I tried it. I have lost a lot of weight since then and have lower gears on my newer bikes so I just grovel my way up, but get there in the end.

yes it beat me fair and square this time but i will tackle it again, been seriously thinking about changing the cassette for better gearing.

I had a nice walk too, I had to get off the bike and walk up the hill at Anderton Boat Lift, Cheshire, last week, obviously, it was only to let the row of cars get past, it wasn't anything to do with the fact that my legs had given up in the windy(ish) conditions, honest. That's my excuse anyway.....................
