I carry my laptop most of the time so the rack at least stays

my issue is where to put the stuff if I don't have a pannier, backpacks are uncomfortable and I don't have a frame pump and I have the one pocket on my jersey (which I reckon would max out on phone wallet and keys)

if you have a small backpack or shoulder bag, bungy it to the top of the rack. Just make sure all the bits of straps are tucked in so that they can't catch in the wheel.

If you fancy treating yourself to a bag, look for a rack pack that will sit atop the rack, without adding too much weight.

Frankly I'd take the pannier, and to hell with what anyone thinks. Just don't fill it to the brim with stuff you don't need (something I am utterly incapable of!)

right so keep a distance and shout car, I can do that

probably go for 1 pannier with bare essentials (well + lunch and a jumper) I was half tempted to shove in a camera but I don't have one besides my phone that doesn't weigh a ton

right now I fancy treating myself to a decent bike so all is on hold for a while

If funny how someone can usually reduce any paragraph of mine to a few words. Do you think I talk the same way I pack my pannier - IE with multiple redundancy?

nah I'm just a bit dim - lifes motto is Keep It Simple Stupid else I get it wrong

I hate backpacks I need one to take my laptop on my sisters bike and its foul hell whenever I can I don't even use a backpack for cameras in real life

weirdly I find my mtb super skittish without its panniers on, not ridden without them for aaaggges but I got home and put them in then went for a few miles blast instead of putting the bike away and it seemed to bounce everywhere - v strange

I will let you all know how it goes (unless a shoot pops up last minute)

Large saddle bag. Maybe one for the handlebars

'car up' and 'car down' (I can never remember but I think 'up' is coming from behind, and 'down' is oncoming - I just shout 'car!')
Correct. "Up your bum" vs "down your front" is how I was told to remember it.

A single packet of jelly babies should be ample for a 20-30 mile ride, and a single water bottle.

Ah, there's my problem. I've eaten the packet of jelly babies before I've even got the bike wheeled out of the garage

It is definitely easier to ride in a group.

- and someone might have more jelly babies, maybe?

Go for it. Cyclists and triathletes are generally very friendly. I was worried about gping swimming with a triathlon club. Glad I did. I'm a much better swimmer now.
