I've run it for 18 hours and it still had 20-odd percent battery left, at which point I recharged it from a 15 quid recharge battery thing.

So yes, it has a limited range just like any GPS does.
Can you use it while it's recharging?

This is the point about the Etrex, you stop, pop new batteries in and you're good for another 24 hours.

Yes you can. It's just a battery connected to the phone. Holds 2 and a bit recharges and weights the same as 2 AA batteries.

I'm never 4 days from electricity anyway. The only reason I didn't charge the phone on that occasion was to see if the power pack thing works.

ETA: The phone takes about 35 mins to charge from the power pack, after which you just disconnect them until it runs down again.
