Google wallet - without linking payment method?

Page may contain affiliate links. Please see terms for details.
The basic point - from my point of view - is that every shop wants us to have a membership card for their scheme
Tesco ClubCard, ASDA rewards and all that

and my wallet is already far too thick so adding 3 or 4 more plastic "membership cards"
hence to access the "rewards" I have to find and use the ASDA app and the Co-Op whateveritiscalled app and find the barcode to scan it

which is a pain

it would be nice if there was an app that just saved all these and I could have that on my startup screen and just use it wherever I am

(if anyone who does that sort of thing is listening then it could get all fancy and use GPS to find out what shop I am in??)

anyway - probably not going to happen

In the meantime I have a load of ASDA rewards point - and I have zero clue what I can do with the or how to do it
same for Co-Op and Nectar

Oh - and I want to do all that without having ANY bank/credit card stuff on my phone

I'm not awkward of fussy

but I might be cynical

Apple Pay does this. I have payment cards and all the loyalty cards. Just double click the side button and they’re they all are. Very simple to use.

Asda rewards mount up and once you have £1 worth (or multiples of) you can create a voucher to that value to use on a future shop.,
Co-op axed their reward points so you best enquire next time in their if you can still use then off your shop. The app still gives weekly offers to card holders plus some prices are reduced to card holders in store. For example a £1.50 bag of 5 oranges is on offer currently at £1.25 and their also an app voucher last week which made them 85p.
Nectar points can be used at a number of places. In Sainsbury's and Argos 500 will knock £2.50 off your bill. Self service tills ask you if want to use your Nectar points but at at staffed tills you normally have to specifically ask for them to be used.

Thought occurred to me

no use at the moment

but there is no real reasons who Tesco - et al - can;t link a credit/debit card to a membership card

so if I go to Tesco and pay by my credit card - then it could easily link that credit card number to my ClubCard (which I am sure they already have linked somewhere inside their systems) and behave exactly like I have showed/scanned my physical ClubCard

They would be perfectly capable of doing it

Think I might suggest it to them somehow
at some point
when I get round to it
probably before I die anyway

On the same basis there should be no reason why you cannot have a single store card that works in all stores. Its one way of locking up a self service till IME by scanning the wrong one.

I think, stress think, Tesco already do this if you have a Tesco credit card.

I use that
you have to scan it as a ClubCard first
then scan it again as a credit card

It is good - but could be better - why not justuse my credit card

The point being that I want to reduce the number of cards in my wallet

That will inevitably be to the detriment of the elderly of those on a very limited income.

Progress, or change for changes sake?
Every piece of technology from printing, through to telephones, radio etc etc has been "To the detriment of the elderly". We will all get to the stage where the latest technology is too much for our aged brains to take in if we live long enough. But if you halted progress because of that we'd still be stuck in the middle ages.

I don't think you can use Gogole wallet without having a linked card. How would Google get paid if you didn't have one linked. I have bought books using Google pay.and you need a linked card.
You can, if you don't pay for stuff with Google pay but with another method.
I use Google wallet to pay in Tesco with a linked (to wallet) gift card - it's because I get a discount through work if I buy a gift card for Tesco.
I didn't know that, however you can use the wallet in all sorts of places that don't do store cards and you would need to have a debit or credit card linked to it for that use or am I wrong.
You can use the wallet anywhere, it's only if you use Google pay that you need to link a payment method.
Google pay and wallet are two different apps, but Google pay can reside in wallet ^_^

Your G wallet does all that, I have my Asda, Tesco, Nectar cards in there.
They automatically link to the respective app after a transaction.

They do with their credit card, I have one.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

I have my Tesco clubcard, Nectar card, Waterstones card and B&Q cards all in my google wallet. Which is on my home screen. One tap to open it, one more to open the particular loyalty card, and the barcode is showing.

I do also have a payment card, because I regularly use my phone for contactless payments. That would not be necessary if I didn't want it.

SO - can I use Google wallet for just the store cards and have no payment card attached?

mind you - it would require informing Google of when, where and what I buy

but then I already tell one big organisation that anyway

You’d be telling google. And the shop you’re buying from. And the bank which you card draws from. And the card processing company who handle the transaction. And the police who noted your car/face when in the proximity of the shop. And your mobile provider who knows where your phone is.
