So we're on the second page of replies and nobody knows if Google wallet can be used without a linked payment method?
I'm only reading till here lol no time to read the third page
I use Google wallet with a couple of loyalty cards and a reloadable gift card only.
No linked payment card was asked for.
Eventually, when I get round to it, I will probably add more payment cards, but they are not necessary for the app to work.
I'm on Android.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I don't think you can use Gogole wallet without having a linked card. How would Google get paid if you didn't have one linked. I have bought books using Google pay.and you need a linked card.

As for the 'try it and see' suggestions, this involves downloading the app and I suspect clicking agree/accept to multiple T&C's, cookies and access protocols before I even get to the point of refusing to add a payment card, by which time I have already sacrificed any notion of privacy for my smart phone and any data within it.

You have already said that you have an android phone so will already be sharing data simply by having it turned on. I monitor traffic on my home network and it’s astonishing to see the number of “calls home” that Apple, Google and Alexa devices make.

As a test last year, to get a baseline, I set up a fresh Pixel 8 with no additional apps and monitor traffic from it’s MAC address for a week. In short, you better dig out your tinfoil hat. Maybe we all should too.

Now I am no longer on my mega fast internet I now use Pihole at home, it block nonsense traffic so speeds up everything else. Here’s a snapshot from less than 30 seconds of activity.

I’m sure they’re all up to no good but thinking you’re safe my not using one aspect of a phone is nonsense. You’re tracked on every search and purchase you do. If the large companies act illegally, which many suspect, then you’ll have a number of devices which can record what you’re saying either openly or potentially covertly. If you have any smart phone/tablet/speaker then it can record what you’re saying. Many tv remotes also have voice activation. And if any state really wanted to know what you’re up to that it’s child play to have secret refording devices built into your router, tv etc etc

Not using google Wallet or not having a smart speaker to stay off the grid ans remain hidden is sadly completely ineffective.

This'll get the Big Brotherists gnashing their teeth:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/digital-driving-licence-coming-this-year

About time!

I also wonder if the drivers licence will be able to be stored in other wallets, too?

I don't have an issue with that while it remains optional, but sure as eggs is eggs the government will realise that not manufacturing physical licenses will save money and it'll become mandatory at some future time.

That will inevitably be to the detriment of the elderly of those on a very limited income.

Progress, or change for changes sake?

I used mine for tickets and loyalty cards alone before eventually adding my debit card.

I would like one where I could store all the cards and then use it in any shop without having to find the right app and/or card for this specific shop/card combination

Ideally one that will store the details and display the relevant bar code or QR code which can then be scanned by the shop's systems

problem is that no-one does that without wanting to add in payment things which then makes it a higher level of risk if it gets lost etc
and if it does get lost then you pretty much have to contact the bank and block the card just in case

It may seem stubborn or paranoid of me to try and do this, but it is my right to choose who I do business with and on what terms. I will contact the Motorsport organisation and ask for an alternative form of license. I'm sure I won't be the only one?

I have Google wallet, and I only store tickets on there.
I do not have any payment cards linked to it.

Well of course you need a linked card if you are going to use it to pay for things.

The question here was about whether you need a payment card linked if you are NOT going to use it to pay for things.

When my train company started to do QR tickets, I didn't particularly want to have Google Wallet with a payment method. I installed Pass2U Wallet because that definitely let me have just the tickets without having to add a payment method. I don't actually use it now because the train company took a more sensible approach and integrated ticket display into its own app.

In which case why have it. If the OP is so against the idea of doing that then don't. Simple.
