I wouldn't rule out S/H, i recently bought a pretty nice road bike worth probably £6 or £700 at least when brand new in 2009 with a few miles under it on upgraded wheels this year for £200 on here
although that said you do have to be careful with various bits when buying S/H
so far i haven't seen anyone post any of the carrera bits?
how about a carrera zelos or TDF or virtuoso? good begginer bikes at a budget but i can recommend taking them to you LBS (Local Bike Shop) to have them give it a once over and set it all up properly as halfords have a bit of a reputation for setting bikes up poorly

can't find the TDF, have they stopped it and instead brought in the new CX ones?
