I would take that as a rule of thumb as manufacturers size differently and also model types size differently. I couldn't get on with a merida..even thought the price was right. the frame just didn't fit me properly

How much of a difference is there between models with regards to frame size?

I am only 1 inch taller at 6foot, but I am riding a 58cm frame, I apparently fell between a 56 and 58, but inside leg dictated a 58.

However, Even with my saddle all the way forward, a plumb line running through my pedal spindle, is still forward of my knee, yet I so far have no physical complaints.

Well as your mountain bike seems more comfy, you could try to transfer the fit over to your uncomfy bike.

But also, adjust adjust adjust!

To be honest, unless you're prepared to spend a hundred or so on a pro bike fit, all the guidelines around saddle height, angle, reach to bars etc etc, are just that - guidelines. We're all at different proportions and with different levels of fitness, suppleness and varying degrees of twist in this or that joint. If you can get used to tweaking the bike fit to what makes most sense to you and what makes it most comfortable to ride, you'll ride it. And save yourself the cost of the pro bike fit.

I have fannied around with my bikes to a ridiculous degree in terms of trying fit options out, to a fault really. I don't think any of them are really set up how I once had them (optimal for me). Nonetheless, and for example, I have my saddle forward of the supposed optimum point and a stem that is 1cm "too short" - whilst this removes a smidgeon of the feeling of speed, it doesn't actually make a difference but it is far more comfy.

Thanks stu, appreciated the input back on the mb at the mo as I have to ride past a diary farm. This time of year the mud is horrendous I tried it on the road bike, it was far..... To slippery cheers Andy

I would have thought it should be easy to replicate the mtb position on the road bike. Seat height, saddle to stem relation, reach etc.
