I only fell off once and that was with cages.... and because I was pissed at the time and wore massive Sketchers to try and show off on my new bike. I couldn't get the things out of the cage.

Landed in the middle of the road and some unknown bloke asked me if I was 'Alright love?'. I was actually quite fine until I saw the blood amoungst the grit.....

SPDs - meh - not a problem. Just practice and I have never had a fall off moment with them (probably due to the above). Go for it and Good luck!

I hope my mate is not reading this. His moment was in his garden .Fell onto the lawn could not get his shoes out.So he had to use his mobile to phone for advice while still fastened to his bike laid out on the lawn.

Ninety-nine times out of a hundred the only thing you'll dent is your pride.

Blimey! He's only thinking of falling off once or twice, not 99 times!

Had my second 'moment' last week. Same reason as the first: cycling slowly on firm ground going into soft sand/gravel and coming to an abrupt upright stop, very quickly followed by a horizontal position and lots of swearing.

On my own about a mile from civilisation, climbing a steep hill and in granny gear the chain slipped.

Bike fell, I fell, left shoulder dislocated........

After initial panic, using lots of word's my mother told me were bad, I figured the only thing to do was to reset it myself with the use of the nearest dry stone wall (a la Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon, although if I remember correctly he was in a shipping container).

i'm aware of the technique. Is it a law of physics that all cyclists fall off the first time they use clipless?

I've used clipless shimano SPD pedals for a couple of years now and have never even had a wobble.

Put them on a loose setting at first, and then tighten them up as you get used to the feeling.

Also, in my personal experience I have never known anyone who has fallen because of them, and neither have I seen anyone.

Biggest myth in cycling. I was actually looking forward to my first 'moment' so I could tell people. Don't worry about it!

Even though I haven't as yet succumbed to 'the' moment. I have seen someone who has.. poor fellow, he looked awfully embarrased.

A friend and I both went clipless (this is not a euphemism for anything else) in the same week, just before the London to Brighton a few years ago, we both had our first clipless moment on the ride.

He fell over at the start, stopped and forgot to unclip his foot, just a group of extremely fit looking women rode past, they all stopped and rushed over to help him get up .

I fell over when we stopped at a set of traffic lights just after the start, unclipped left foot and the bike toppled over to the right; unfortunately, nobody rushed to help me up .

Thought I would share my first clipless moment with you.
Had them for about a week and had practised a few times in the local roads, ready for my first ever organised ride (The Summertime reversed Stevenage to Saffron Walden event). It was the first official stop where I had my 'moment'; in front of dozens of other cyclists, all in slow motion, even my speech slowed down as I yelled 'Fuuuuuuu ....' (never got to the end of the word).
A few sniggers from the onlookers, no damage to me or bike except my pride.
