To deny the existance of hills would be foolish. Look, here's a map - it's pretty clear how it all works.

I can't believe it!

It just can't be coincidence can it?

It looks just like a cycle helmet!

Dont you take any notice of that Red Light bloke either. He used to be a hi-fi salesman specialising in loudspeaker cables.

Ooooo a cure-all elixir - that sounds great. Wonder if it's any good for head injuries.

It is apparently very good for mice though.

The trouble with all of these helmet threads is that there's nothing but anecdote and opinion. One day there may be some rigorously conducted research with worthwhile results to talk about. It hasn't happened yet.

The case for helmets and making them mandatory is mainly anecdote and opinion (the start of this thread being an excellent example). I usually try to base my response on evidence with references to the extent of being mocked in another helmet thread by the pro-helmet anecdote and opinion purveyors for a) having "obsessively" read a lot of the research literature on the subject and b) citing the papers that backed up my points. The trouble therefore is, in my mind, much akin to the Intelligent Design v Darwinism contest where unshakeable faith and belief meets scientific objectivity. Yes the debate will never convince the true believers but it may influence some of the observers standing on the sidelines to at least make informed choices rather go on just assumptions which is what I think most people do (including myself before I was triggered to look at the evidence)

Why does it matter? Its not really about helmet wearing - whether it makes small difference either way is neither here nor there given how safe cycling is. What does matter is there are continuous attempts to make helmet wearing mandatory. The one in Jersey last year succeeded, the one in Northern Ireland this year didn't but it was a close call and the latest one in the UK Parliament is still ongoing. So its all about cyclist freedom of choice. There are plenty of people who want to remove it by making helmets mandatory. There are many who want to retain freedom of choice (67% according to last weeks BMJ poll) but no-one is trying to remove freedom of choice by banning helmets. And that is what makes the argument so assymetric. If the likes of tigger succeed we will all have to wear helmets and many will stop cycling. If I succeed, nothing will change - you will still be able to ride with or without a helmet as you wish.

For why freedom of choice is important, have a look at this video:

Whoooaa - I'm outta here!

Before you leave can I interest you in a homeopathic cycle helmet?

It's a cycle helmet that's been cut into 10 pieces, one of those cut into 10 pieces and so on until it's decomposed into it's component molecules. The dust containing these sub-microscopic particles is then released into the air and then the air's captured in a glass phial, which may or may not contain a helmet molecule, and sealed. Whether it does or does not contain one of those molecules makes no difference to its efficacy, the air contains an imprint of the molecule with all its injury preventing properties intact. The original helmet was of course one which had been worn in a real accident. That's the key to the product working!

The homeopathic helmet just needs to be carried with you on the bike, no need to get it near your head!

Just transfer £299.99 to our Paypal account and we'll send you your very own homeopathic cycle helmet. Guaranteed to protect you just as well as, if not better than, the conventional inconvenient plastic and polystyrene version you can get in the cycle shops.

(Worrying that adverts even loopier than that really do appear!)

Haha, class. But you forgot the succussing - you need to bash each dilution of helmet against a special leather cushion to activate its magic energy.

No thanks - I prefer an evidence based approach. Fortunately Cook and Sheikh [1] showed that every helmet worn protects two people so as long as someone else is wearing one, I don't need to ;)
