Gillet over jacket or jacket over gillet?

Get a good 100% merino base layer (Planet X are doing some very good deals ATM, also look at DHB). Next a good long sleeve jersey. Then a Gillet. If its too cold then replace the Gillet with a Jacket. The latter is good enough for me down to minus 5. If you need more, then sure why not wear the jacket and Gillet in which ever order you like. Also think about a good scarf tube thing, Planet X are doing Merino ones for a tenner. And a skull hat under your helmet. Merino socks and neoprene overshoes. Sorted.

Right I went out today
I don't do cold well and had a cheap mountain active t shirt type base layer, long sleeve jersey, gore bike wear phantom jacket which probably would have been adequate but I ignored some of the above comments and put a gilet on top. Overall had good movement, didn't sweat and kept warm

Newbie to it all so don't have all the gear and had normal sports shorts, so legs were cold to start with but felt fine on the 12 mile ride. Going for bib shorts and leg warmer combo though

Other part that was cold to start with was my ears but was ok after a mile

I have a very slight sense that you might be new at this game, not sure how I come to think that, after all I see lots of idiots not so well informed cyclists wearing shorts in freezing temps and indeed a once in a blue moon always seeing cyclists riding with gilets over jackets, er come to think about it not that often, nope, thought about it some more, never actually.
Sorry, just teasing, wear whatever you want I wore a Gore Phantom jacket today with a thin long sleeve base layer underneath, fingerless gloves and was comfortably warm, but then I'm a northerner ^_^.

Ha quality!
Before i got the gore jacket I was out in the cheaper long sleeve jersey and my casual north face big gilet! I just love being toasty and hate the cold

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Usually (above freezing) long sleeve base layer, LS merino jersey, club colours gilet (tight), then windproof/showerproof jacket (thin but very effective), tomorrow (well below freezing), SS compression top, LS base layer, LS merino, LS club jersey, then thin wind/water proof jacket. Layers work. Gilet under jacket - if it is a close fitting cycling one.

If the temperature is such that the gilet is sufficient but it might rain, get colder, you want to warm up first, then jacket over gilet. If it is definitely cold enough for the jacket but you might want more, other way around.
I tend to swap Gilet for jacket first and then if It gets colder add the Gilet over the top. I guess it depends on the relative merits and breathability of both particular clothing items.

You'd be a prat to wear a gilet over waterproof unless it was a waterproof gilet

Many waterproofs work in two ways, the first being a water repellent layer where the water forms into drops that disperse.

If you put a layer over this, (Gilet / Hi Viz or other) then the water repellent layer ceases to function which can lead to "wetting out".

Why pay for a waterproof and then prevent it from working?

I've worn a gilet over a jacket many a time, its usually a softshell jacket but occasionally its a full waterproof. My waterproof are a bit large for me (so it just make's it a bit less flappy) and my fashion sense bought a black jacket and I prefer to present a contrast to drivers. With a softshell its just an emergency layer to put on if it turns cold or wet on a longer ride or to take off if it warms up
