Giant PR2 wheel upgrade (£300 budget)

I’ve had a set of these for 3 years now. Best wheels I’ve owned so far. Think I paid £220 for them.

The superstar wheels look like they have quick release skewers you would have to check
Just to confuse you more Hunt wheels do a disc wheel at around £330 .

Quite liked the look of these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/700c-DT-...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

With the following spec

FRONT WHEEL DT Swiss R470 rim, 20mm internal width, tubeless ready, 24h, Specialized full sealed bearing thru axle hub, centerlock disc, DT Swiss Champion 14G stainless steel spokes, DT Swiss brass nipples.
REAR WHEEL DT Swiss R470 rim, 20mm internal width, tubeless ready, 24h, Specialized full sealed bearing thru axle hub, centerlock disc, alloy freehub body, DT Swiss Champion 14G stainless steel spokes, DT Swiss brass nipples.

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
I think those are the rims I have on my commuter and DT spokes are good except I think Champion spokes are the plain gauge ones? Butted spokes are better.
Specialized hubs are/were always considered rubbish, particularly the freehub, so unless they have improved that reputation in recent years I would avoid any wheel with their hubs.

I am glad OP is moving away from PR2 wheels. Both Giant and Decathlon has this long standing issue. Great entry level bikes but stock wheels are something else.

Any entry level 3rd party budget wheels is a massive improvement.

Enjoy the new wheels whatever you finally pick.

Think I’ll go for one of these 4….

https://www.huntbikewheels.com/prod...-disc-brake-road-bike-wheelset-tubeless-ready

Are the race D and mason x worth the extra?

Also I’d need to spend an extra £20 for the centre lock conversion kit on the hunt wheels too. Not much but still an added cost

A guy from the club has some scribes and likes them. My mechanic likes the hunts. I've recently upgraded my PR2 wheels for some handbuilts from DCR and they're fantastic. Alloy rims, bitex hub and aero spokes. I was sceptical I'd feel the difference, but what a difference it has made! I paid £440.

Oh just realised you'd put a budget up - still, my comment about the scribe/hunt still stands!

I’ve sent DCR an email enquiry

Will see what they say.

I've got Hunt 650b on my Gravel bike, roll nicely and quiet free hub.

I've also got some Scribe 50mm carbon on my Defy, well made but noisy free hub, again roll really nicely.

I rate both brands but obviously there are other options available as suggested.

I suppose the benefit of hand-built is you can spec what you like/what suits your riding style and can have them repaired /rebuilt as and when. I would have gone for scribe, but for the noisy hub and lower spoke count! He turned them around pretty fast as well.

I emailed a few companies for advice/reccomendations and a price for a wheel set build, I realise it was Easter Friday when I emailed and they may have been closed all weekend but a few haven’t replied at all, most notably The CycleClinic and DCR Wheels….

Maybe they are just busy or am I likely not going to get a reply?
Anyone with any experience?

I found if I emailed David on a Friday he'd get back to me Wednesday following week. If you haven't heard by Friday I'd give him another email as he's probably busy and missed it. They won't answer on weekends.

He did actually miss my first email - again, because he was busy. Small business!
