Hi all,

I am a bit of a Giant fan after having a few hybrids over the years but have decided to get a Giant Defy 5 Road Bike but I am just not sure which frame size to go for. I have visited JE James Cycles a few weeks back who had the Large and Medium Large in stock which I tried on a turbo trainer. The Large frame I was stretching to much but the sales person suggested the Medium Large looked fine for me. They had no Medium frame to try.

Last weekend I then visited Giant in Sheffield and got measured up but they only had a Medium Large to try. They also suggested that a Medium Large would be ideal as when standing over the frame I had an inch or two of clearance.

As I will be purchasing from either Rutland Cycles or Tredz I sent them both an email asking about the thoughts on which frame size. Rutland suggested a Medium or Medium Large and Tredz a Medium Large

The giant size chart suggest a Medium Large also by going on my height and leg measurements.

So my main question is which frame size do you think would be best for my size. I am 5ft 11 and inside leg is 32" ish

Many Thanks

I'm 5`11" too and take a 30-31" trouser. I have a Defy 2 and Revolt both in M/L which I think is the perfect size for me.

Yep I am 5'11" and take 31" trouser as well. I have a M/L defy 1 and also had a bike fit from a physiotherapist, the comments were the size is spot on we just need to adjust the seat position and have a 10mm longer stem for the perfect position ( I do have long arms)

Another 5'11 er here with a 32" leg.

I have a 2014 Defy 0 in M/L. I originally felt slightly stretched in the arms. Changed the stem from 100mm to 90mm, and now feels spot on.

HTH.

We measured my size without shoes on and the correct inside leg not going by trouser inside leg size. Good to know a few have gone for the M/L who are about the same size as me or shorter.

The sales person at the Giant store in Sheffield also suggested if I flip the supplied stem it will make it 1cm shorter if needed.

I'm also 5'11" with an inside leg of 32". I bought a 2015 Defy 0 earlier this year and it feels very comfortable for me. Great bike too!

Go test ride and see how it feels. We are all different

So you went and got advice from both JE James and giant Sheffield but have no intention of buying from them, seems a bit out of order! I assume you are just looking to buy as cheap as you can but not pay for any service. Did you ask the retailers whose time you used whether they could do anything on price (bearing in mind after sales support doesn't come for free) and also tell them that you have no intention buying from them. Maybe it's a C2W issue? (Benefit of doubt here ;) )

Hi

JE James had the sizes in but limited stock. By the time I had phoned back a few days later to pay my deposit to secure they had no stock and not getting anymore as its the 2015 model. It is why I went up to Sheffield to Giant to re try but again they checked the computer database and could not get me a Defy 5 and only a Defy 4. I explained to the giant store I was able to get a Defy 5 for £300 ish instead of the £499 that they listed it at and would not be able to do anything on the price if they had the stock. He offered me a 4 for £30 more but that was off his price of the 5 so in fact it would have cost me £230 more than I wanted to spend on a bike. I still need to get accessories as well so if I spent all my money on the Giant store then I would be spending a lot more than I wanted. I did explain to the giant store I would be buying from someone else but he was happy to still help.

Ah fair enough,
Have you confirmed Tredz have stock as their website is notoriously unreliable when it comes to have stuff available even if it says so. I've had orders cancelled or take months to be fulfilled (I wasn't in a rush)

Waiting again for Tredz to email me back regarding stock. It took them all week just to confirm what size they thought I was.

Once Rutland confirm they have stock and plenty I am going to go with them and pop down and try all 3 sizes as a Medium I have yet to try and do everything at the shop instead of by email or phone.

I think a large will be way too big, depending on your reach look at medium and medium large. A bike that is too big can be a very bad thing (one caused me to develop chronic tennis elbow and I needed very painful surgery to resolve it)!

I am 6'4" and ride a Large Defy - so I suggest you don't even sit on one again. I would concentrate on deciding between the M and the M/L. I have a friend who is more than comfortable on a M at 5'11". My suspicion is that either will fit, but one will fit a bit better and longer term need less changes (stem etc).
