A good bike fit doesn't need to cost as much as that - but I guess London prices are way higher than us poor folk up north! But if you are serious about getting her into the cycling then splash out some nice money on her - it can save a lot of money down the line

Thanks one and all some really great advice there to be honest. I can afford to spend more, the only thing holding me back is the fact that she may not like it after a few rides. Fair points well made about spending more to ensure a good ride quality, food for thought certainly.

In answer to those that asked she is 5ft tall so would need a small bike obviously.

Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and spend the money that I know deep down is warranted.

If you buy second hand you will lose little if you later sell it on. Most bigger bike shops have a range of bikes people have traded in to get new bikes available at half retail price or less. My biggest piece of advice is let her choose the bike she likes but make sure it fits and is of decent quality.

^^^ +1 Edit: Argh! slow typing. This was meant to be under TMN post above.

Also, that red triban I listed above seems to be back in stock in 48cm. If you can pick that one up, you'd be doing well. Generally regarded as a bargain at £300, it's brilliant for £150. I think it was cheaper but marginally better spec'd than the white triban the replaced it. Carbon forks, for one thing!
