My wife is really keen to join me when out cycling so I am on the look out for a decent road bike, don't wish to spend a fortune as she may not enjoy it so anything decent out there on a budget?

All help appreciated.

Don't you mean, "My wife is really keen to join me when out cycling so she is on the look out for a decent road bike ..."?

How much does she want to spend? Have her go to Evans and some local bike shops so she can testride a few bikes and choose?

Or maybe look at some second hand options

Oh it will be me paying for it, I'd like to spend no more than £200 to be honest.
You're best looking second hand in that case, or double that budget at least to buy new.

You know her best, if you think she'll stick with it as long as you do, then don't buy a pile of rubbish.

If she's really keen on it, let her choose the bike, whether second hand or new. It needn't break the bank, but while you can get a brand new roadie for £200, you really don't get a lot for that and it could put her right off.

However, some suggestions:

Which are the only two close to your budget that I can think of. If you get towards £500, the situation is a lot better.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
That isn't a lot to spend on a bike to be honest and if you buy really cheap, then the components, build and ride quality will be quite poor. It may end up putting you're wife off cycling rather than giving her the best start to cycling.

Spend a bit more, make riding the bike as good for her as she can get, and she may be totally hooked on cycling. Buy a bike the is clunky, noisey, and bad quality and she will never want to ride it.

And good luck if you insist on buying a cheaper bike....

Pay for her to have a bike fit BEFORE buying her the bike - that way she will get one that fits properly. The better you get her the more likely she will enjoy it and go out more often. Lots of men say 'she might not enjoy it so don't want to spend a lot' and buy some horrible, heavy clunky thing and then are surprised when she doesn't take it up!
