What kind of speeds would a cat4 race be on the flat? Or is this a rediculas noob question which is impossible to answer because of course races vary all the time?

The speed seems to vary significantly between races and within the race.

Sometimes the race will amble along with nobody wanting to be on the front / waste energy trying to pull away.
Then when a small group has pulled away the peleton will surge forward full pelt to catch them.

The trouble is there's often a lot of riders who are clearly well above cat 4 level. They're only in the race because they haven't gained enough points to move up a level yet.

If you visit Cycling Clubs websites, they have race reports and results, but don't publish times and speeds, except for TTs.

My best advice is to join a club, talk to their racing coach and enter a Cat 4. See how you perform.

As for 'trade jerseys' Pt II.

A newbie on a midrange bike wearing full team replica clothing WAS known as a 'Wanabee'. An old guy on an old bike wearing old trade clothing WAS known as a 'Nevawozzer'.

If you see an oldish bloke on a Peugeot 531 team PX10 wearing a merino Pug jersey with world champ collar and cuffs, its me the 'Nevawozzer', not Tom Simpson's ghost.
