Occasionally, a very low gear ratio is useful. There's a mountain near where I live (Mt Dandenong), which has a few roads climbing up it with maximum 28-30% grades 
. I found the gearing on my tourer useful for those - I have 50/39/30 on front, and an 11..34 cassette on the rear.
