Slowmotion, perhaps I should try that with my B Twin Triban 3. Find a 8 speed one with 28 tooth and see.
Just check the B.C.D. I tried that on my prowheel chainset and it has a really odd B.C.D. on the 30th ring I also read that the shimano triples 30th can only be replaced with 30th rings though not sure. I replaced the whole chainset with a touring one till I got fitter from June 2013 till about May this year, I had down as low as a 26x28 or 1:0.9 or 24.4" though I could change the rear on mine to a 26/32 instead of the current 25/28 to give much the same I can lug a 15Kg bike up a 15% hill with the 30x28 so a carbon should be a breeze, if I did that I would hardly need the 30th and a compact 34 would be almost redundant, as around here I would never drop off the 40th ring as 40x32 is 1:1.22 or 32" or so, and I hardly ever go that low.

Slightly over 1 here but I'm a slow rider and even slower on hills - 34/32. When I'm riding with others I don't want to hold them up. Lightness and a wide gear range make sense to me.

what does your bike weigh?

I think my groupset is Shimano 5600. Changing from the Shimano 30T to the Spa 28T one was just a drop in replacement. It's the Stronglight 74 mm BCD Zicral alloy one. Here's the link....

I had to take off one of the cranks and slide the axle thingy out from the bottom bracket bearings in order to do the replacing. I'm not sure if that is strictly necessary but it seemed so to me.

@ Slowmotion - You do need to do that to swap the inner ring. Big and middle can be done with the crank still on, but you can't do the inner one.

Even trying to get the middle ring off without taking the crank off is a bit like one of those infuriating mechanical puzzles that drop out of your Christmas cracker!

It's a bit fiddly. Getting the whatever-they're-called slotted things back in is hours of swearing fun too.

It was just something i read and I know my 30th isn't a standard 74mm something like 76 from what I measured, Hence the new chain set.
Hopefully since I dont use it much it should last a while (this is the original I put back on) the touring one was 26/38/48

Today on the way to work I walked in to a local cycle shop and found Felt Z5.
It has the gear ratio I was looking for but on a compact/ double. It has 52-34 in front and 12-30 in the back.
So I assume it should be fine.
Any views on Felt Z5?
