there's a pretty camp chap at my work, but he has a wife and a new baby. in this day and age, i doubt he's in the closet, more likely one of those blokes that found campness as a good mechanism to get close to the ladies…

I still didn't fall in until somebody spelled it out.

But then I'm that way with straight women as well. I can't read the signs; they have to be very very obvious.
You're not alone on both counts! I need to be told concisely or I'm clueless.

Gay men (and women) seem to have an ability to spot another gay man (or woman). Gay men tend not to give signs to straight men because there is not a lot of point and because the risk of getting beaten up for it is too high.

Don't worry about it, Abitrary, I'm sure some would fancy you.

Recently a fine upstanding family man I know through work came out to his wife and two teenage kids.

I think today there is a fair percentage of gay people who play straight just to conform.

So saying a "Gay" looking man has a wife and kids so he cant be gay may not be a fair assumption.

Slightly off subject but linked - why do Gay men often act Gay? Do they go to Gay lessons at evening class? There seems to be a camp cleche that some gay people seem to copy. Why?

If as you state that they all live in London, that may explain why so any of my work colleagues are gay at London Underground.
So being gay is still an underground lifestyle.

Don't be too sure about that. A couple of my sons friends were considered definitely gay but both of them aren't

I know what you mean. One of my friends at school was like that, he was very camp and we all just assumed he was gay. We never asked him and nothing ever seemed to come up in conversation that told you one way or another. When he got his first girlfriend in sixth year it came as a surprise! ;0) They're married with kids now so he's only ever been out with one girl his whole life. How cool is that? :0)

In my teens in NZ, I was often called gay and I never really knew why. One gay bloke I knew even assured me I was! Now either his gaydar was faulty or he was trying to talk me into it!

My parents have since admitted being "worried" about me and my brother asked me outright many years ago if I preferred "little boys or little girls" (sic).... I replied "neither, I prefer women".

I'll a happily admit to finding some blokes attractive, either looks or manner, but I can honestly say I've never fancied a bloke. I'm also pretty good at trawling my mind and there is no sign of repression, so what others might have picked up on is beyond me.

My wife's brother is gay and I've often meant to ask him whether he'd ever thought of me as gay - but I fear that's a conversation that could either get misinterpreted or just be downright embarrassing!

Oh, and Arbitrary, get some wing mirrors fitted - the gay blokes you meet could be checking out your arse!

Actually my parents thought I was gay until I brought my wife (then girlfriend) home. I just started late and didn't put it about in the same uncouth way my brothers did. And I liked the company of men. Still do.

No I don't think any assumptions can be made either way. He might well be gay or perhaps more accurately bisexual.
In just the same way as being big, butch and 'manly' is any clue either.

Anyway isn't sexuality more of a sliding scale rather than a clearly defined thing?
On one end totally hetrosexual and the other totally homosexual. Most I would guess are at varying stages in between.

As Tom Mabe said.............a weekend in Las Vegas, buy a couple of drinks, a cute little Mexican midget............

Last Fri. I ventured into l.pool c.centre and I overheard well you could not miss the gentleman say to the doormen, upon exiting a club: 'i reckon your cocks are totally small flaccid and cold in this weather heh lads'

I dont feel gays need any special treament !

i get about 90% lecherous looks from women, which can be unnerving.

I don't mind the grannies adjusting their specs, but the kids in pushprams trying to give me a high 5 and shouting "you're supposed to me my daddy" is unnerving.

But I don't get the same respect from men. Government statistics show that one in ten men are gay, but I don't see them leching over me.
