But I don't get the same respect from men. Government statistics show that one in ten men are gay, but I don't see them leching over me.

If 1 in 10 are Gay then most are in the closet - or they all live in London. I have worked with a few openly gay men, but I could count them all on one hand in the 25/30 years I've been working.

slightly ot, is there a term for having a good insight into whether the people you meet in everyday life are closet cyclists? (bikegaydar?)

On the opposite side of the coin I have the most appauling Gaydar and never really make the connection. I once turned up at a party and my Godfather was there with his 21 year old boyfriend (he was 40'ish). He was in the closet to some of his family at the time (including my mother) but not to his work mates. I still didn't fall in until somebody spelled it out.

But then I'm that way with straight women as well. I can't read the signs; they have to be very very obvious.

Talking of gaydar. One of my son's pals is so obviously gay it's unbelievable but my son doesn't seem to have twigged! I'm saying nothing ;0)

If as you state that they all live in London, that may explain why so any of my work colleagues are gay at London Underground.

Modern estimates are about 3 - 4% for gay men. Although that goes a lot higher if you count same sex behaviour at some point during their life.

Don't be too sure about that. A couple of my sons friends were considered definitely gay but both of them aren't as far as I know and one in particular is renowned as a pulling machine. He is never without a stunning girlfriend.
Of course that might just be a bluff but I don't think so.

Sound advice.

i once got thrown together with a couple of blokes on a course. One appeared effeminately camp, and lisped a little. In my mind i had decided he was gay. The other was a 'man's man' who liked darts and supping. It seemed clear he was straight.

The surprise of discovering that my judgements were completely wrong still stays with me. The camp person was pulling attractive women left right and centre in no time, and had a plumbing background. The other guy 'came out' as gay on the course..

i learned a lot about the dangers of judging from that experience.
