The 800 is bad beyond belief.
Millions would disagree... I wouldn't be without mine.

The idea is good but I don't think much of the execution. Given that Garmin leads the market on price I expected something really slick.

Its all personal opinion and I know I must be in a minority but I find it's crawling with bugs. The UI seems ill thought out in places, the maps are missing roads and that base camp software has the worst UI and route planning engine I have seen of any route planner.

Not with open street maps it doesn't. All roads present and correct sir.

Don't use base camp, use strava or other and it's fine for recording results.

Plan rides with ride with GPS, export the gpx track and nav is fine.

Lovely bit of kit.

Being the techno geek who wants the latest toys, I went for the 810 - today... So far it was a breeze to set up. I bought the performance bundle without maps and an 8gb micro SD card. I downloaded open source map from http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm So far it seems good.

I don't use the base maps I use the additional Garmin ones. Open street maps may very well be better.

It's not just the maps I have an issue with. It is full of bugs. The most persistent bug is that the measurements on the user defined training pages change mid ride to measurements you did not select. Today my cadence measurement changed to calories burned - something I never display. On another page the sunset time had changed to average speed. Then I found that pages I had disable altogether had become enabled.

And while I'm at it, for the premium price why could they not coat the screen with the same stuff you get on Oakley sunglasses that nothing will stick to. Out in the sun, not only is it difficult to read due to reflections, it also gets covered in sweaty, sun cream finger prints.
