Can any body explain what waypoints are, is it those circle points you use to make a route.

So at every junction turning you have to add a way point then.

I added waypoints to the first few junctions because of its a housing estate and the first few was saying turn left when I wanted to turn right and a couple told me where to go 50/60 yrds past the turning I went down, and I actually find it hard to see the road names and which direction to go because the arrows so small.

No , if you plot the route on ridewithgps it takes care of EVERYTHING for you. As you plot, you should see a cue sheet being generated down the left side of the interface. These are the "waypoints".

On the right, near the bottom, there is a list of options of what to show on the map screen if you tick "Show Cue Icons" you will see all of the waypoints appear on the map.

By the time you've done all this, isn't it too late to go out for a ride..?

It is very quick, if you know what you are doing. 1st few times might take a while, until you find a method that works for you, but once you have it down, it is quick and easy. In fact it often takes less time than reading in the data to your Garmin Connect or Strava.

Personally I like having a route to hand, because it means I can jump on faster rides that go to places I am not familiar with, then if dropped, can either recover a bit then plow on and hopefully catch up if they ease up, or find my way home with ease.
