I have a Garmin 205 that you can put a route into and get a breadcrumnb trail. I have never done this, but if i do will it still log a ride, as in speed, elevation, route etc, or can it only do the either / or option?

I know it is a case of trying it, but i wonder if anyone has done it?

Yeah, my 305 did which was the same idea, try it by plotting and following a route round a few local streets

Go into settings and turn off Auto Scroll.

Yes but remember to start the timer if you switch to follow a route the 305 stops it and Ive forgotten a few times
You probably already found stuff on navigation but I find RidewithGPS generated tcx files the best to follow ;)

Ive created a rote in ride with gps, do i have to import this to the garmin site, then try to load it to the device?

no, you just load the file directly into the 'new files' folder on the device.
It should then convert automatically

EDIT: Sorry, you have a 205 don't you?
So, yes you need to load it to garmin site first.

No, download the .tcx from the ridewithgps website, then plug the Garmin in, open it as a generic usb device and drop the .tcx into the new files folder. Then unplug the Garmin and turn it on, it will load up a bit slower than usual, it is converting the file into its prefered format. Once it loads you can find the route in the courses menu.

Edit, or what Ian said, not a clue re. that.

When I had a 205 I uploaded the gpx to the Garmin Training Centre first and then to the machine.

Just did it, and it seemed to work.

Ride with gps for the route
saved
downloaded tp pc as a tcx
impoted as a course into garmin tc
exported to 205.

on 205 - mode
training
courses
the course
enter on course

Shows a stop watch and a little map icon

Think i then follow the icons?

Yup, should show the route as a grey line (Bread crumb trail)
