I have used a Garmin Edge 705 for quite a while now and this Xmas upgraded to an 800.

It is probably me being thick, but I can't work out how to get a .GPX file onto the 800 and then navigate it.
Can anyone give me the idiot's guide please.

Also, I seem to only be able to set up one Datascreen whereas on the 705 I could have 2 and toggle between them. Can I do this on the 800?

I swapped from a 705 to an 800 and to be honest it nearly went through the window a few times. But keep at it and, like me, you'll love it in the end. The problem is that I assumed (incorrectly) that the two would have the same operating system and the step from one to the other would be easy - WRONG!
I'm away from home at the moment so don't have my 800 to hand but from memory -
You can have several data-screens but you have to turn them on first (I set mine up so long ago that I can't remember how I did it but think it's under 'Training' in the menu).
As for dragging the new .GPX file onto the thing, you need to plug the 800 into your computer and then open the 'New file' folder on the Garmin and drop it in there. The 800 magically converts it and next time you look the 'new file' folder will be empty and the route will be in the machine.

Look here for a pretty good walk-through

Sorry I can't be any more helpful but if you're still having problems next week (when I'm home) I'll be happy to talk you through it

One more thing that might be worth mentioning - Unlike the 705 the 800 will not give you turn by turn guidance by default, you have to select it when you bring the route up before you start the ride. You have to do this for each new ride, it doesn't remember your preference and will always default to 'OFF'
Good luck with the test ride. After owning it for a year I definitely prefer the 800 over the 705 but this was not the case in the beginning! It's well worth persevering though

my power button is a bit dull...as in first firm press won't turn it on or off....reckon this is a issue for garmin to replace (under warranty that is)?

Musa have you tried pressing and holding for a second or so? This is the way I always turn mine on and off. I always assumed this was deliberate and a design feature to prevent you inadvertently switching it off or on if you knock the button.

@Gary E
yes i had a 500 previous to this so I assume that quick soft press is required...I put it down to the build of the device more than anything/...

Bugger!
Well all I can say is that on the couple of occasions I've dealt with Garmin Customer Care they've been really good.
Good luck

Ah, that is helpful. How do you set turn by turn guidance on?

Once you've got the route onto you 800 go to that route but before you click on start go to the settings by clicking the spanner. If you go through the options you'll find one for turning the turn-by-turn navigation on (sorry bit sketchy, I'm still 50 miles away from my Garmin).

EDIT- once you've actually started the ride it's too late!
On my first ride after noticing it wasn't navigating I went into settings and turned it on but it didn't work - this setting has to be selected before you press start otherwise you get the map with the route marked on it but no navigation or turn warnings.
I was hoping that Garmin would change this in one of their updates so that the default setting was 'on' but so far no luck!

Thanks again. As you say, the 800 seems quite different to the 705 but I'm beginning to like it. Test route coming up.

Well, just done my first test ride and not very happy.

The route was picked up fine, but when I went off course (because I couldn't go down a road on the route) the unit locked up. Is this common?

Mine's never locked up on me at all. Sometimes if I go off course it tries to get me back on course with a bit of an odd route. If you look in settings you can set what the unit does if you go off route. It'll either direct you back on course or do nothing depending on how you set it. What maps do you have?

I have the 1:50K OS Maps that came with the Trail Bundle. I have set the recalculate to "Prompted". It had flashed up a couple of times earlier when I strayed off the course but settled down once I got back on it. The final time however, it said off course and then locked solid.
