I would suggest you turn recalculate off completely. Before doing this I had no end of problems.
If you are following a course and things go wrong or you forgot to turn on prompts, you can always start the course again. Very occasionally I find the turn by turn instructions go wrong and restarting the course fixes it. The unit will still be recording fine.
I would also suggest you take a look at bikehike.co.uk. This allows you to load the track direct to the 800.
A single press of the power button should bring up a screen that allows you to adjust brightness and also to lock the unit. Turning off requires a longer press

Thanks - yes I think I'll turn recalculate off. I loaded the test ride from Garmin Connect directly (not tried that before). I've also turned Virtual Partner off.

I've never been able to get on with Garmin's route maker, I use Bikeroutetoaster.com and have never had a problem. My 705 locked up on me a few times but my 800 has been perfect since I bought it (well not quite true but all of the problems turned out to be my fault in the end).

For some reason GC's course creator wont transfer to my 800 even though its recognised. RWGPS works with creating a tcx, importing it to Training Centre and then sending everything to the 800. Its a bit time consuming, however and when adding a new course I had to delete all courses and start again! I thing RWGPS can do it directly but you have to pay. GC has at least made the correct file/folder structure on the memory card and I'm going to try copying it directly to the 'new files' folder.

Its there the GC and RWGPS course now
