I use the Moon XP500. It's robust, water proof extremely bright and you can recharge it using your computer at work.

The moon shield rear light is amazing too especially the crazy strobe setting!!

£40 should get you the front - i recently got a brand new front and rear set on ebay for £55 - best lights I ever used.

I just got two cree q5 front lights £9.50 with a back light included.
One works fine on the unlit lanes round here.
So much so my 10 min test ride turned into an hour lol

I know it is for off road. I am advising on decent stuff to use alongside it. I'd suggest being less snappy.
I'd take issue with 'decent stuff to use alongside', given that you were referencing the German standards, whose function is mostly to ensure that cyclists don't pose a dazzle hazard. Frankly I doubt that any STVZO-compliant light would add useful illumination to a T6 headlight, and adding a non dazzling light to a potentially dazzling one seems pointless.

A good argument for a secondary light is to add a flashing aspect and 'insurance' for if something does happen on a segment of road (this assumes you ride on the road a bit to get there or something).
I have 2 single T6 lights, I got a modest amount of time from one before it packed ip, but I haven't used the second much. I too am trying to source a battery pack so I can make a more reliable supply for the light.

I am predictibly going to suggest the Smart 700 lumen usb. 30 squid....or 2 x 60 Smart Lunar torches plus 4 NiMh, 2500 MaH AA size batteries plus a decent charger. Planet x sell the Lunar 60's. I don't work for them....

*sing* Zombie thread, Zombie thread, everyone loves a zombie thread.

General whitterings in case new people come along tho.

My old style magicshine clone is still going ok onto its 3rd battery pack, (C&B do a good waterproofed replacement pack, bit costly but reputable name) for fast proper off roading it is unparalleled amount of light at such a low price. If using on road as well I'd strongly recommend a fresnel glass insert.

Nowadays tho my Smart 700 is plenty bright for pitch dark path/trail pottering, also smaller, lighter, easier recharge options, lasts longer and is more civilised out of the box for on road use.

Both hit the £40 mark
