The picture from the packaging both illustrates what I meant by down tube stop and how these are meant to be fitted. Definitely designed to screw into the frame, rather be used inline.

(annoyingly I googled for inline, but ended up choosing something that wasn't right)

I guess it is still inline even if lodged in the down tube stop..., mine is fitted inline where I said it is, mind you the diagram in that picture doesn't show it screwed in, presumably it would just sit in there under tension.

Ah ok. Different model of adjuster that. No idea how that's going to work. Presumably you checked the stop to see if it had a thread, before buying a threaded adjuster ?!

Well, no, obviously not. Or I wouldn't have bought the wrong thing. I didn't really know how it would work, so I wasn't sure what I needed. And I didn't know until this afternoon that some frames had threads, and some don't

(only bike I've maintained that has a FD)

I hate gear maintenance. My next bike won't have any!

Only £4.49 wasted, or praps you can return the barrels, after all the wiggle page says "fits any bicycle frame" which they clearly don't, therefore not fit for purpose under sale of goods act.

My limited understanding of cabling led me to understand that the higher the tension at the fixing bolt the further across that would make the dérailleur cage travel. If that's correct then you may have pulled the cable too tight... Try putting into lowest chainring, loosen fixing bolt and reduce tension by a gnats whisker...?
