Get some decent cycling gear - padded shorts make all the difference, as would some good gloves. The ride itself is OK, but you do need to be comfortable with the bike and of riding amongst some oddballs. Some of the riders do bizarre things, like just stopping in the middle of the road for no apparent reason.

something I've picked up from trying to up speed or distance is alternate which you improve, eg go further one day, but faster on a shorter distance before trying to combine the two.

Eg I've pushed my distance to 40 miles but hammer the speed on 20 mile rides, but last sunday did another 40 mile ride fast (and will be doing another this sunday) so my next jump would be pootling say 60 miles and do it a few times before I try to do it fast. Part of it is psychological in that you know you can do the distance because you've done it before and that if everything goes tits up you can slow down and just make it home.

I'm wanting to do the Exmouth Exodus this August which is 100 miles at a fair pace, I don't know if I will be able to but it would make me feel pretty fit

My main piece of advice would be to get out on the saddle sooner rather than later !

Don't underestimate how sore your ass can get after only a few miles when you first start out
