FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast - Southend-on-Sea May 4th

Combination of things really. The ribs ache after a 12 mile commute but that could be due to the backpack. Finding out it's actually due to cycling 30 miles in probably isn't a good idea though. Also my confidence isn't great yet and with the possibility of a damp road in the dark, it's best I stay home for this one I think.
Cor! The mere mention of having to buy a beer for loving friends next month and the poor lad has come over all feverish. Get well soon.
By Monday morning you'll either be shovelling snow or paddling a dinghy - the meteo is that bad.

On my commute this morning I spotted our intrepid scouts on their final recce for Friday's ride. Only had time to shout "Simon!", but I assume he realised who it was.

we saw you! And then we passed by the building you work in on our way home.

An interesting recce ride. It might be clever to leave the Brommies at home. There's just too much water.

Yes, don't be tempted at the ford (if you go that way) to put your bike onto the road once you've walked over the footbridge. It's quite deep !

How clever might it be? No desire to spoil another ride....

to be honest it might be clever to the point of being obvious. I've just measured my Brompton. The chain is about 130mm off the ground. That's not enough. Rob and I did a fair bit quarter-to-three freewheeling....

We had a great time. We spent twenty minutes trying to egg a van driver on through the ford, which has a tad over three feet or water in it (the path to the side is do-able). A Landrover with a sticky-up exhaust managed fine but Transitboy wimped out.

Beyond the ford the water was flowing across Buttsbury Lane at a rate of knots - and, later, we kind of waterskied down Old Stock Lane. It all added to the charm of the ride.

Snorkel. The sticky up thing on the Land-Rover.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

OK, lets put the Brompton idea on hold for another time then.

Rhubarb will be disappointed but I shall tell her it is for the best. No handbags then?

I know, I'll ride the plug fixed two speed. The lovely Helen will be pleased to see it leave the dining room.

While I'm still so cheered up by the recce ride I'd like to thank Rob for coming along. And for testing the depth of the water beside the path.
