What about it getting nicked? Will it be more attractive to thieves than your Dawes when you leave it outside a pub?

All the rest is white noise but this is the real concern, not that I actually go to the pub these days but I do leave it locked outside local shops, even unlocked sometimes. What I really don't want is a scrote magnet and I fear the Spesh, or similar, may be just that. To be honest if I could get bigger tyres in the Dawes I wouldn't even be thinking about this, hence why my first thought was a frame swap. The Dawes frame itself was dirt cheap, though the forks and parts weren't, but I've trawled e-bay and the like and can't find an appropriate frame to replace it with.

It's weird, I mean we're only talking a hybrid style frame here, considering they knock these bikes out like mad you'd think there'd be a few frames knocking about, unloved and unwanted.

Either you've put me off or my booze fuelled optimism is waining, but it's back to the drawing board.....I really don't want a bike I can't leave locked up in public

I'm afraid I side with the N+1 branch here. Anything MTB shaped is going to be more of a scrote magnet than the Dawes, and if you leave it unattended at some point it will get nicked. Keep the Dawes as a pub bike and get something specific for off-road use.

I'd be tempted to get a low end MTB. Something like the Decathlon 5.2 or a GT Avalanche/Aggressor. You should be able to pick something like this up for less than 200 quid, and if you find youre not using it shift it on for not much less.

Besides only 3 bikes...... it's just not enough

A second hand n+1 MTB could be the answer. They pop up in the local papers' classifieds regularly, often originally bought in a fit of enthusiasm for healthy exercise then used once to ride 5 miles along a local path.

MTBs are the target of choice for low-life, bike-nicking scumbags, so for trips to the shops, pub, etc., on tarmac, you'd do better still using your Dawes.

Thanks folks, a frame is no longer saught, my plans have moved on again and something else is on order...all will be revealed soonish.

Agree with all those re keeping a rubbish bike for leaving at shops, it may or may not be the Dawes, I may have to sell that in the short term to fund my plans.
