I've acquired an old Falcon, Reynolds 531, that someone had cobbled into a hybrid-type monstrosity.

I'm going to restore it using drop bars and down tube shifters. Given that I'm keeping this one for myself I've decided to strip the paint (mostly dulux applied by brush) and repaint myself.
I'm not paying to have it powder coated and have been tempted to clear coat the bare frame, bit internet research has led me to believe this isn't a good plan as it will not prevent rust.

I'm hoping to achieve a "distressed metal" finish. Anybody got experience of doing similar or advice on suitable paint? It's getting a couple of coats of red oxide primer once rust-free, then the fun can start!

Its a nice old quality frame. sure You don't want to do it the justice it deserves?

It's a pretty average one, I wouldn't experiment on a decent bike and would get it powder coated. It's getting built out of my parts heap and will be used for bombing about with the kids etc.
Got a yearning for a minimalist look, wanted bare distressed metal, but can't afford titanium and hate aluminium!

Hammerite or Tekaloid
Painted a couple of rat bikes with hammerite/smoothrite in my yoof, not good! I'm gonna experiment and hopefully have a rust free and protected frame.......that looks like it's never seen a coat of paint and been left out in the monsoon.

Nitromors paint remover,a light sanding or rub down with wire wool then clear cellulose lacquer, as many coats as you feel are required to get the desired finish.

Wouldn't clear show all the bronze brazing as well as the steel, though? It may be a cool look, though.

That was my initial thought. Clear coat over bare metal. A bit of internet searching shows the general consensus that this does not provide rust proofing that is any use?
