Forks out of Mtb Frame

The answer to the question of a stuck steerer is to hit it very hard. It's not easy to know how hard to hit it. Basically, if it's still stuck you haven't hit it hard enough. One of the issues is holding the frame so that the hammer blows that are being transferred to the top bearing aren't dissipated. This is where a good workstand comes in handy.

Coppaslip is a carcinogen. Avoid using it wherever possible.
Not according to the manufacturer's data sheet on their website as far as I can see.

No it's not! Copper is quite poisonous and in Copaslip it's finely ground and easily absorbed if you get it in your mouth. I don't think they'd be allowed to sell it under COSHH if it was a carcinogen.

I'll give it some more WD40 and leave it to soak, I'll be regreasing anyway. I shall then have a few tentative attempts at prising out the split washer but I'm hoping to remove it "cleanly" and re-use the headset. The steerer has had some quite determined smacks from the hammer but it's not easy balancing a block of wood on the steerer and holding the top-tube with my other hand whilst striking the wood. Hence the need for a rubber mallet. They're common in the 16oz weight (the only size listed by B&Q) but I reckon that's too light. This cycle specific rubber mallet (....a rubber mallet is a rubber mallet is a....) retails at £20+, not sure what size it is though.

I have a workshop stand but doubt I'd trust it to hold steady. I've currently got the back wheel in the frame and on the floor whilst I lift the forks clear of the floor before striking the steerer.

I figure I need to strike the steerer from each end (back and forth) until that split washer can be dislodged.

Indeed not - and I've been misdissing it for years! 'Widely considered to be carcinogenic' is the best evidence I can find on the web. The safety document from the manufacturer makes for interesting reading though. Carcinogen or not - it's still pretty horrible stuff.

I would link to it if I could operate this gadget. But no.

Two days ago I applied some Plusgas. Today the rubber mallet arrived. After a couple of hard downward hits on the steerer I still couldn't measure any movement. A couple more (much harder) hits and the pitch of the note ringing out changed

Extremely flammable.

4 FIRST AID MEASURES
INHALATION: Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.
For breathing difficulties oxygen may be necessary.
INGESTION: Rinse mouth thoroughly with water and give large amounts of milk or water to people not
unconscious. CAUTION! Some medical advisors recommend against induction of vomiting!
SKIN: Wash the skin immediately with soap and water. Get medical attention if any discomfort
continues.
EYES: Spray in the eyes: Make sure to remove any contact lenses from the eyes before rinsing.
Promptly wash eyes with plenty of water while lifting the eye lids. Continue to rinse for at least
15 minutes. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

5 FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Use: Powder. Dry chemicals, sand, dolomite etc. Water spray, fog or mist.
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES:
Containers close to fire should be removed or cooled with water. Use water to keep fire exposed
containers cool and disperse vapours.
UNUSUAL FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
Aerosol cans may explode in fires. Risk of explosion if heated.

6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
SPILL CLEANUP METHODS: Extinguish all ignition sources. Avoid sparks, flames, heat and smoking. Ventilate. Wear
necessary protective equipment. If leakage cannot be stopped, evacuate area. Ventilate well.
Larger spill: Do not contaminate water sources or sewer.

7 HANDLING AND STORAGE
USAGE PRECAUTIONS: Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Read and follow manufacturer's
recommendations. Provide good ventilation.
STORAGE PRECAUTIONS: Aerosol cans: Must not be exposed for direct sunlight or temperatures above 50°C.

oxygen available for breathing (asphyxiant). Exposure to high levels of vapour may result in
central nervous system and respiratory depression with subsequent loss of consciousness.
INGESTION: May cause stomach pain or vomiting. Gastrointestinal symptoms, including upset stomach.
May cause irritation of the mouth, throat and digestive tract causing vomiting and abdominal
pain.
SKIN: Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause severe irritation. Acts as a defatting agent on skin.
May cause cracking of skin, and eczema.
EYES: Spray and vapour in the eyes may cause irritation and smarting. May cause severe irritation to eyes.
ROUTE OF ENTRY: Inhalation. Skin and/or eye contact.
