My latest guess is...

5 subs for each team (10 total)
1st yellow (10 cards shown)
2nd yellow (10 cards shown)
Red (10 cards shown)
All of these players are carded whilst they are on the bench.
There is no provision for managers / other staff to be shown cards.

11 players for each team (22 total)
1st yellow (22 cards shown)
2nd yellow (max 3 on each team = 6 cards shown)
2nd red (max 3 on each team = 6 cards shown)
Eight players per team remaining which is the minimum number.

Total cards = 10+10+10+22+6+6 = 64

S

this is the closest answer so far but isn't correct.

a few hints....

players on the bench CAN be shown cards even if they don't come onto the pitch

managers and coaches DO NOT get cards (they are just asked to leave the dugout)

a match can continue with each team having 7 players (or more, of course) but if a team goes down to 6 players the game is called off.

Anybody want to figure out another guess..........???

As simon said .. but with an extra 2 yellow and 2 red, leaving 7 players per side ?

Correct answer!!!

i couldn't quite follow all of simon's logic so can't say whether he (and you) are correct.

Simon was correct with the 30 cards for the bench (2 yellow and a red for each player)

of the players on the pitch...

everybody gets one yellow (= 22 cards)
and 4 from each team can get sent off with another yellow and red each 8x2 = 16

30 + 22 + 16 = 68

if another card is shown then the game must be abandoned.

My last effort...

SUBS (on the bench)
The maximum according to FIFA is 7 per team (this can be less as in the Premiership - BUT IS NOT SPECIFIED IN THE ORIGINAL POST)
* 14 yellows (1st offence)
* 14 yellows (2nd offence)
* 14 reds
This leaves no subs on the bench.

PLAYERS
* 22 yellows (1st offence)
* 8 yellows (2nd offence)
* 8 reds
This leaves 7 players on each team.

Total cards = 80

Good one. Sounds like an OVD Junior cup match.

But Quick Draw is right. A player is limited to 2 yellers but not to just one red.

I once got a red card in a friendly for calling the ref a fat flabby ignorant B**stard and not only did he BRANDISH the red but ordered me to stay until the end so we could have a square go at each other. F**K THAT I thought.

i thought all professional games allowed 5 subs per team (not including friendlies)

i bow down to your superior knowlegde. I did think really carefully about how i asked the question but perhaps i should have specified the premiership.
