PS Oops - WRONG RING!!!! (Speed-reading again!) I will leave the post here in case anybody has the opposite problem!

Hang on chaps - all this talk of 'tensioning the cable' ... That sounds to me like the cable might be too tight!

The cable should go a bit slack when shifting down to the inner ring. Use the endstop to limit the inward movement of the cage, not cable tension.

If you slacken the cable TOO much though, then you would have problems getting the chain up onto the big ring. You should be able to find a tension that works both ways.

I'll try again!

Set the front mech inner endstop with the chain on the biggest sprocket and with the cable disconnected. You want the inner edge of the inner part of the cage to just clear the chain. Now pull the front gear cable tight and tighten the clamping bolt. You then have the cable as tight as it can go. Any tighter, and the chain would rub or shift up to the middle ring.

Try that with the other endstop as slack as possible. If the shift works, then adjust the endstop with the chain on the big ring and the smallest sprocket. You want the inner edge of the outer part of the cage to only just clear the chain.

If it still doesn't work and the mech is down as low as it will go then the only other thing you could try is turning the mech slightly to give the chain a bit more lift/push but that shouldn't really be necessary.

Its gone to the LBS. Letting a professional sort it, and put a new chain on, and cassette (I can do this myself! honest)
