so i picked up a bike for free yesterday it just needs a new rear derailleur i have an old one off an old mtb and want to use it if poss the derailleur i have used to sit under the dropout on the bike it came off (townsend) and the new frame has the mount above the dropout which i am guessing means i need some kind of derailleur hanger?? but i dont know where to get one its an ammaco mtb any ideas where i would get the right one??

I hope I understand correctly from your description. The old derailleur you want to use fits like this (hanger fits under the wheel nut):

But the new frame needs a derailleur that fits like this (derailleur bolts to frame or to a hanger mounted on the frame):

Is this right? If so the spare derailleur you have won't fit your new frame. You need a direct mount derailleur similar to this: Link

If there should be a seperate hanger (like these) and it is missing, then that is more of a problem as there are over a hundred different versions and I don't know which one you will require.

err not really i will try explain a bit more! the second pic with the mount on the frame is how the derailleur fitted to the old mtb the new bike has a kind of groove that a hanger fits into and then the hanger hangs below the dropout like in the first pic but it dosent fit via the wheel bolt it has annother hole with a kind of insert in above the drop out like this

so if i find the right hanger can i use the derailleur that was originally fitted directly to the frame?

If I get you right - you had an old type of drop out on the Townsend

Now you have a hanger type drop-out but no hanger. (the hanger is the shiny bit in your last pic).

Ah, yes. I see now. If it's like in your pic then the direct frame mounted derailleur will fit.

Do I take it that the hanger is missing or damaged? All the Ammaco bikes I've seen have been supplied through Hawk Cycles/Cycle King so speaking to your nearest branch may be the best option to source a new hanger.
