There is actually quite a deal of evidence that shows that conscientious drivers who don't have their stereo's at Warp 10 can maintain a very accurate steady speed without having to look at the speedo every second. Indeed, if you cant look at roadsigns, pedestians, speedometers etc without crashing then you probably shouldn't be on the road anyway.

The reason is obvious... there is a partially visible sign saying "alamystockphoto" across the road. They wouldn't have seen it until the last minute and would have had to take avoiding action

to be fair that mostly across the pavement, which they shouldn't be driving on anyway ;)

This is the usual panic we get from something that helps us do something that is good for us, but is hard.

eg
  1. We should eat less, and make sure our waist/hip ratio is below 0.8/0.9 but don't talk about body shape, it leads to eating disorders.
  2. We should avoid sunburn and prolonged sun exposure but rickets!
  3. We should all move a little more, and these devices encourage that but someone may overdo it.
even though obesity related deaths far outnumber eating disorder incidence, melanoma death far outnumber rickets cases and inactive people far outnumber a few obsessives that will push themselves too hard because a gadget tells them to.

A relative of mine wears one of those wristbandy fitbit things. How I laughed when she told me that her and the family had been out walking for a few hours and had apparently burned 11000 (yes eleven thousand) calories.

They do seem to be marketed at people who don't have the motivation to get fit, but who use the initial "must use new gadget" syndrome to at least make an initial attempt at it, slowly reverting to type as the novelty of "oh look, 5000 steps in one day" wears off.
