There I was, sat at my desk, happily munching on a sandwich reading the latest posts on cyclechat, when something went pssssssst. I looked at the other guys in the office and we all said, 'whos bike was that then?', turned out to be mine, front wheel flat as a wotsit. Hurrah, I get to deal with my first puncture!

Turned out to be a hole, literally a hole, in the spoke-side of the inner tube, not the result of a piercing, just looks like a flaw in the tube itself which has finally let go after a 1000 miles.

Your first??? What tyres do you use, I get about 1-2 a week

Just call me Chris...
Had a puncture on my M+ yesterday, first for 4000 miles and I think that's only because the tyre is so cut up from all the flinty lanes I ride.

Much of it is luck, then there's the roads and paths travelled, but if I got more than 1 or 2 a year I'd start to investigate why.

A tube giving out after 1000 miles is poor but not unheard of.

18 month old Bontrager racelite hardcase, 3 rim side flats in 2 months, turned out I had picked up some sidewall damage, small light coloured patch near the bead that felt like sandpaper. Took me ages to work out what was going on, new tyre and all back to normal.

Chris - that sounds like it was caused by damaged, missing or displaced rim tape. If so, it will happen again unless you sort the rim tape out.

Ask fellow CC member Calum - it happened to him 4 or 5 times on one of my rides, and in the end he gave up and caught the train home ...

I think I would quit cycling if I got 1 or 2 a week.

Commuted last summer and autumn on my MTB with slicks and now also done around 600 miles on my hybrid bought in November, all without a visit. Although I rarely leave home without a tube and pump 'just in case'.

You are a brave bunch to give fate a good old prod with some of those posts!

I got loads of punctures when I first started then realised I wasnt fitting the tyre correctly since then nothing for the last year......... oh no I've just done it myself.

I gave the rim tape a good check and couldn't see anything obvious, tape in place, no edges or spoke'y bits poking thru. The hole 'shape' was not a "piercing" shape, it looked like there was a flaw/weakspot there. Brandwise, it was some chinese branded tube, now got a continental in it.

I'm glad it didn't happen on the road. One good thing about it was that I actually noticed what a bad state the actual tyre is in, again, this is a 1000 mile tyre, and the shoulders are perished in a lot of places, very poor in my mind. Fortunately after finding a gash or two in the rear tyre last week I've got some new ones on the way.
