I'm using SPD pedals with Shimano M077 shoes. Yep, the MTB ones.

There is also an R077 shoe. The only difference between them is the design of the sole, the R077 is smoother. However, on my last Sportive I spotted at least 4 other riders using MTB shoes on their road bikes, it makes no difference at all.

I love My Allez elite, she's last seasons colours and spec but is trim, fast, tight and she looks fab with the arched top tube.

I wasn't trying to convert you, I was just pointing out that to a large degree SPD's are not needed and could be seen as extras which are not necessarily needed for everyone.
