Hello all,

I have finally got out on my roadie today, I am a complete beginner and enjoyed every min of it. I did 5.5 miles in 20 minutes. I wanted to do more but i am 15 and 1/2 stone and my body just said NO lol.

I have a Garmin 800 and also wondered how I can share the info with you all :hello:

I am also needing a pair of glasses as my eyes just run from start to finish..

Thanks all

I wouldn't get hung up on times immediately mate

If you've destroyed yourself after only 20 minutes you've probably hammered it too much, you'll be far better off taking it steady for longer (with a few short bursts) and building the distances up.

The times will come down naturally

Nice one mate. Take it nice and steady. Set yourself doable targets and increase it slowly. Your stamina will build up in no time. It's best to keep your interest up rather than deflate yourself. It's a lot harder in this damp weather anyway. The weight will soon fall off and you'll get a double effect. Less mass = more distance and speed! Well done :bravo:

I was out on my new Giant roadie for the first time too this weekend and also was pushing harder that I normally do.

I'd echo what others have said and not get to hung up on speed but concentrate on getting the miles in. You'll then have an idea of what your capable of and, if you want, can start worrying about your speed during the ride.

Well done, but you are going too fast  ;)
For eye protection from wind/cold, any sports glasses will do, even work safety glasses.
For sharing ride info, join Strava, then upload your rides from the Garmin, copy and paste the links on your posts, or follow other cycle chatters.

The Garmin is a very nice bit of kit to have but save taking the info off of it once you are back home. If you start off getting hung up on what speed you want to average you will end up not enjoying the ride. Fitness is all that counts at the moment and that comes best with time and steady miles on the bike. Route, weather conditions, how you are feeling etc all play a part in what average speed you can attain on any given day which is why it is largely irrelevant; especially right at the start of your cycling life.

I was the same weight as you when i started on my Defy .... My average was 13.5-14mph.
2 years on i am 13.5st and average 17mph (on a good day) over a 10 mile ride

Getting better, I am a bit of a gadget man, I just have route info on during the ride but enjoy the stats afterwards.
Thanks all..

That's great....far from getting faster, I seem to be getting slower these days. I guess it's encroaching senility
It may be that, or something else....I forget......

Anyway, @Giant-Churchy go at a comfortable 'all day' pace to start with. This may only be 10 mph, but it really doesn't matter. It's about getting yourself comfy, and getting the legs used to the movement and rhythm of cycling. Keep your cadence upwards of 70 if you can as it eases the pressure on the joints, better to have your legs spinning a bit than straining to push the pedals round.
As for the eyes, get yourself a pair of these from your local Screwfix. Cheap, look OK and work really well with no misting.
