A Minging Manc...
I haven't been 'targeted' yet in all the urban road miles I have covered (about 6000 in the last few years) but I have had silly "shouts" from cars passing me from behind on a couple of occasions. It's often a shock but to be honest it has only happened maybe less than a dozen times and now barely registers more than a "kn*bhead" muttered under my breath.

My younger brother has been doing more cycling this year and posted on his facebook page that he was hit in the face by a half full beer can lobbed from a passing car a few weeks ago. He didn't manage to get the vehicle registration but noted that it was a black 55 plate Matiz so has reported the incident to the police.

One thing you can be almost certain of is that the culprits are braindead, cowardly and d*ckless and if they were to be confronted by an angered cyclist about their actions they would probably turn to jelly and cry for their mummys!

I was parked up at some lights a few months ago with a motor bike IN THE MIDDLE of the road to my right. When the lights changed to green he rode straight in front of me and cut me up ! Not happy with that he then slowed down, opened his visor, stuck his fingers up and said
"Its idiots like you who get killed !" They think we have no right to be there for some weird reason. I reciprocated his gesture and asked him would he like me to ride on the pavement or something, then i can knock old ladies over?

These things never happen when you ride in the countryside. The worst I've had was an egg thrown at me when I came out of my local (on foot).

And yes, having a riding buddy makes the miles go by quicker. It's very difficult though to find someone with the same speed and ability and interests and a roughly similar family/work timetable. You can always join a club. What about going out with the gang from Bury Leisure Lakes? I think Ride On in Rawty also have a chain gang.

Thats the trouble with street riding! Mindless cretins!
Yes, finding people with similar work/family timetables is very tricky, as for folk from Bury Leisure Lakes, i don't know any! and not sure what Ride On Rawty is!! lol

Just ring Leisure Lakes and ask about their after work rides. Ride On is a very good boutique bike shop in Rawtenstall, ask for Craig or Anthony or Andy. Also try asking Sarah at Mike Cooksons in Whitefield and Damian at DJ Cycles in Holcombe brook. Most shops run rides once or twice a week. failing that, join BAD, Blackburn and District, a friendly club: http://www.alexbarnes1653.webspace.virginmedia.com/bikes/ but you'd need a car to get to their Wednesday night rides and Sunday rides.

Report all of the details you can remember. It may well develop into a case against the twat who owns the car in the long run.

I have the same over the years of commuting including issues with 1 paritcular car every morning and night for nearly 6 months until I changed my route for a short period.

1 I have had recently resulted in this happening to my cycle helmet - I was just seriously glad I was wearing one at the time. The rock that did that damage would have left me needing more than just a few stitches it had hit skin. It was one of 3 that made contact with me that day.

Ouch!! Thats not pleasant to see  Glad you survived it too!

Well done to the OP on completing his journey though! If it were me i'd have been inclined to give up and go home with my tail between my legs!

You could be forgetting the 'Rochdale Factor'. I lived in the place for over 40 years and although it was a great town back in the 70s & 80s the last couple of decades has seen a massive decline and this is typical of some of the behaviour that I have witnessed in the town. My advice would be to point your bike in the opposite direction and take a ride through Bury and up toward Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall.

Was out Sunday and a few miles north of Aberford at the roundabout joining the A64/A1(M) a motor cyclist had come of his bike, I saw at least 2 police cars and heard at least one more siren. Loads of signs that way on Saying to die for indicating motor cyclists slow down.

Reading this thread really makes me appreciate where I ride. I have had 1 missile thrown at me in my entire riding history (a bag of sweets - which hit me unfortunately & bloody hurt!) and probably only a dozen insults hurled.

Suddenly I don't feel so hard done by.
