Can you not get some sort of compensation from her?

Yes, the lady driver did stop and we exchanged a few words about how she could have killed me, was driving way to close and was too impetuous. She responded by stating she was disabled, but I pointed out that she should be able to control the car or not be on the road at all!!

Just because she's disabled doesn't mean you have to be too!

Well done for completing the ride, and all the best in getting your nerve back again.

Good luck with the recovery, I am afraid that a lot more needs to be done in this country for cyclists, cars have got to be slowed down.

Like hell they do! Too bloody slow. This incident arised from the driver being a total pillock. What needs to be done is a like for like punishment. For example if you injure someone as a result of you being careless or wreckless, then similar injuries should be applied to you. Its cheaper than locking you up.

To the OP, I would be absolutely tampin. What you should have done is got as much details as you could and report to the police. Try claiming the damages of his insurance etc. What I would have done isnt recommended.

Thanks all for the continued support. The problem with damages and compensation is that it comes down to my word against theirs in the absence of witnesses and whilst the police were sympathetic, they also pointed out that the chances of successfully bringing damages are very slim

Im feeling better today. A lot less sore and the bruising is coming out

I'm taking comfort from the fact that I've successfully completed many previous rides and all I can do is ensure I am adequately protected from the risk of future occurrences - helmet, gloves, etc

I'm in a whole lot better shape than the poor fella described by Minotier above

Let's be careful out there people....

Just seen the post. Glad to hear you're relatively unscathed. Mentioning Hanningfield, I'm assuming you're in my neck of the woods too?

she would probably escape prosecution , but I'd say they're not lawyers...( it is pretty amazing, I mean, what would her defence be, that you just leapt into the side of the road?)

she's caused an accident, you need to claim..

That stinks, glad to hear you and the bike are still in one piece.

Glad you are OK. 4x4s driven by crap drivers: we call them Canyoneros (after the Simpsons song). I was cut up by one last week because she couldn't bear to be behind me on a pinch point which of course she then had to slow down for....and then 30 yds further on she pulled in without warning to park.. luckily I had clocked her as a canyonero, was keeping my distance and got round her safely. She had a bumper sticker that said "Brake and save a horse's life" which I thought a bit rich.

Been out this afternoon and came home to all your responses. Made me feel a heap better reading them all!

The bike is fine. Miracle!

I have a weapy leg and a badly swollen upper arm from the wing mirror impact (it was a big 4x4)

I called the police this afternoon who invited me to complete an accident form. They wouldn't be interested in pressing charges, and frankly I'm not too bothered about that either. Hopefully the shock of knocking me off will be enough to slow her down a bit in future

Thanks all for the words of support. Great community spirit on here makes me feel so proud to be a part.

Now, where's that wine glass!?

That's a very nice gesture, but could I ask you step back a minute and think about the incident.

From what you describe, it wasn't that she was going too fast, it was her inability to judge distances correctly. This might be difficult to correct, unlike slowing down which is relatively easier. Are you sure that she is in a fit condition to drive?
