Best thing is when you unclip one foot swing leg over crossbar forget other foot is still clipped in and sort of piroette with bike.

Try a little black boot polish to touch up the scratch.

I did think about that but, as they're brake levers, wondered if I'd just end up with boot polish on my hands when I used them.

Blimey, have you actually done that? Sounds like you do yourself even more of an injury.

The first scratch is the worst. After that you tend not to care as much on appearance and tend towards function. Panic yee not.

First public clipless moment for me yesterday. Riding in a group on Norland Moor, we had the option of riding the big rocks in the bottom of a gulley, or the windy little path at the top. I stayed on the top and young Cubester decided he'd ride the rocks. As I set off, he was below me in the gulley, about six feet lower down, so his head was level with my pedals. I was clipped into the left pedal, but hit a tussock as I was clipping the right foot in. I simply fell sideways and failed comletely to get my foot out. Luckily for me Cubester provided a soft landing, and all I did was topple onto him. He made all sorts of silly girly fuss about the blood coming out of his knee and the fact that his right wrist hurt a bit. As I so gently pointed out, at least he didn't have to straighten his lights out like I did.

Why is that whenever you get something new, be it an iPhone or Bianchi, you can guarentee that if you are going to drop it or damage it it happens in first few days! Grrrrr

As a beginner, I like the idea of clipless riding but the reality of falling scares me. I've got three screws through the top of my left shin after having my left knee reconstructed and I'd hate to have some situation where my foot got stuck in a fall and I end up twisting my knee again and being out of action again. Am I right to be a little dubious about using clipless pedals in the future?

Not really. Sure, they take a little getting used to, but it sson becomes a natural and subconscious action. If everyone fell over all the time, people wouldn't use them I suspect. You'll probably fall off once or twice, and almost certainly when standing or near-standing, rather than when actually riding, so little damage is done most of the time (save things such as the topic of this thread!)

I'd agree with radius. I think the biggest issue with clipless pedals is if you misengage and get a nasty scratch on your leg (it does happen). This is true to an extent with all metal pedals with those teeth on.

I think my clipless moment came, not as a result of being physically unable to get unclipped, but rather having read so much about clipless moments that when I did need to unclip unexpectedly I panicked and totally froze!

I did 35 miles today in clipless shoes/pedals and a few times I was glad of the extra transfer of power you get being able to pull up, as well as push down.

Don't let the horror stories of clipless moments put you off!

I'd be a lot dubious if I were you. I don't feel at all happy about having my feet stuck to the pedals.
