I've got the Ice Toolz cable cutter, but prefer long-nosed pliers for crimping. I'll do ont crimp using the end of the pliers, then do another one next to the first and at 90 degrees. Seems to do the job.
You sound much more dexterous than I am: there would be ferrules flying off at all angles, swiftly followed by little pieces of my fingers.

One crimp, gently, with pliers. A gentle squeeze the opposite way will release the ferrule when required, ready for re-use*.

*I'm not really that tight, but it's useful when you don't have any spares and the bike shop's miles away.

I find my teeth do the job fine - If I purse my lips after then it just makes sure the cable fibres stay together - it helps that I starred in alien and have a job as a traffic warden for a hobby

Like many bike mechanics I use big old side cutters. You have to go carefully lest you chop right through the ferrule but in some workshops their use allows individual mechanics to leave their own set of nips on the ferrule as a 'signature', so you can trace a cable back to its installer.

You can run a small amount of solder into the end of the cable to prevent fraying, this also means you can remove cables without having to remove or replace ferrules.
This generally doesn't work.
The ordinary solder that you'd just have around doesn't stick to stainless gear/brake cables

Who could be bothered with soldering anyway? Way to add a bunch of time and faff to a simple job. If you use sharp cutters and apply crimps properly there's just no need for it. Or superglue for that matter.

I have a pair of electrical pliers/cutters which have a useful crimper.

I came by them somehow, somewhere ... but quite legally

I've heard the superglue 'trick' too, so might use that in the next day or two. The biggest faff in finishing off the ends of cables is getting the wee ferules IMHO. I don't reckon I/hope I don't need a box of 500 ....

When ever I pop into my lbs I usually ask for a few and they usually give them for free.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I use shrink sleeving and fit using a Heat gun or Hair-dryer. This method is tidy, does not flatten or splay out the threads of the inner cable so that it can be re-threaded through the outer for maintainance.
Nice idea! I always leave new cables long enough when fitting to allow for crimps to be cut off cleanly, so that the cable can be removed and put back, without hassle.

if it helps, i bought a non cycling specific pair of cable cutters from toolstation for about 5 quid. they cut the cable and also crip the ferule too.

but, they are non cycling specific :stop:
