Thanks for the advice on the cycling, and erm general life...

I won't get a chance to get out again until Thursday AM, but will try larger breakfast, skip coffee and take it easier at the start and see how I go.

Do make sure you drink something with your breakfast though, get dehydrated overnight - water, watered down juice pr similar. Especially as the temps are increasing again. I can't leave the house without caffeine, tea is my preference first thing, no coffee until I get to work

This.
Subject to you not having some medical condition, poor hydration is the most likely cause. Small bowl of porridge is fine for a short ride like this. Particularly in this warm weather we tend to wake up quite dehydrated and it takes time to rectify this. Drink plenty, then drink some more. See if that works. If not, see your GP

today I learnt that bonking can mean two very different things. one I wanna do a lot less and one I wanna do a lot more!

If i drink more than a cup of tea before i go out on 20-30 miler i always have to find a bush somewhere to water the weeds. I takes lots of water with me though.:headshake:

You're just not fit enough to be honest.
You need to cycle more often rather then a couple of times a week.

So he manages 12miles regularly, recently he's been knackered after 4/5 miles... hmm

If your last 2 back to backs were within a few days and you had to head home feeling rubbish, maybe you're coming down with an illness infection type of thing. That's assuming your sticking to the same pace as usual and not tanking it.
