Ok, first let me say its cool that more people are cycling, but my issue with fair weather cyclists is they only come out for a couple of months a year (if that) and so they lack experience and do some stupid things. I think they should be made to have some training or just stay off the road.

Stay off the road and cycle where, exactly? The pavement?

Unfortunately there's only one way to gain experience....

And welcome to you too!

There are just as many regular cyclists who do stupid things on the roads. May be you have not been riding long enough to have come across them yet.

Incidentally, how do you know that they are 'fair weather' cyclists?

I confess. I don't like cycling in the rain and avoid it wherever possible.

Should I scrap my bike now or can I wait til winter?

Just pm me and I will arrange collection!

Is a fair weather cyclist one that can predict what the weather will be in 12 hours time on the commute home? If so the BBC should give them all a job!!

For me, the more people that get into cycling the better!

I'll add - met my 1st new commuter last night. Didn't assume they were a "fair weather" cyclist. Got chatting on the train part of the commute and they'd moved near to me. Gave them tips on on-line shops for clothing, routes to use etc, etc.. We commute at different times mostly but it was good to chat to someone who does the same trip as me.

We've had a recent surge in new cyclists at work, it's great, for the first time ever I'm overtaking people uphill
I've never seen such a collection of rusty, squeaky, rattly bikes in one place before

Actually it's getting to the point that I like them... I think it is great that there is such a spread of types of cyclists ... and that I think motorists are becoming more tolerant of some of the erractic behaviour and aware of the potential - not because I want that sort of behaviour but more because it is becoming more mainstream and acceptable. (That doesn't excuse the idiot who was RLJ'ing at high speed swerving in and out of the traffic today .. even then I didn't hear any cars beep him though I suspect they were probably muttering under their breath or tutting).
